Spring Steel

spring steel prototyping chart

Spring steel is a low alloy steel with a very high strength. This allows objects made of springsteel to return to their original shape despite significant bending or twisting. When the spring steel is in it’s annealed state is has a very soft temper, it is very formable, drawable and maliable.

It is important to note that the parts have no spring like properties until heat treating is completed. In addition to heat treating spring steel requires plating operations for a finished part.

Incodema’s Engineering Notes for working with Spring Steel:
• 1095 pre-tempered. Used primarily for flat springs.
• No heart treat needed
• Does not need plating
• Only suitable for bends up to 5 degrees
